Sore Throat in Orlando or Kissimmee: When Should You Get a Strep Test?
When a sore throat shows up after school starts, it is natural to wonder whether it is a passing virus or strep throat. Children spend more time in close contact at school, and a sore throat can make it hard to get through the day. Parents and other adults in the household can get sick, too.
Most sore throats are caused by viruses. Strep throat is a bacterial infection, and a test can help a healthcare provider decide whether antibiotics are needed. If you or your child has a concerning sore throat, UrgentMed Care offers walk-in evaluations and strep testing in Orlando and Kissimmee.
What are the signs of strep throat?
Strep throat often starts suddenly. Symptoms may include:
- A sore throat and pain when swallowing
- Fever
- Red or swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches
- Tender or swollen glands at the front of the neck
- Tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth
Children may also have a headache, stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting. A rash along with a sore throat deserves medical attention. Strep is most common in children ages 5 to 15, but adults can get it, especially when they have close contact with school-age children.
These signs can raise suspicion, but looking at a throat cannot reliably confirm strep. A clinician can determine whether testing makes sense.
Could it be a cold instead?
It could. Viruses cause most sore throats. A cough, runny nose, hoarse voice, or pink eye tends to point toward a viral illness rather than strep throat. Allergies and other conditions can cause throat discomfort as well.
That distinction matters because antibiotics do not treat a viral sore throat. If symptoms are unclear, persistent, or getting worse, a healthcare provider can assess what may be causing them and recommend the next step.
When should you get a strep test?
Consider a walk-in evaluation if you or your child develops a sudden, painful sore throat, particularly with fever, swollen glands, or known close contact with someone who has strep. A clinician will ask about symptoms, examine the throat, and decide whether a test is appropriate. Clear cold-like symptoms may make a strep test unnecessary.
Testing is helpful because symptoms alone cannot always separate a viral sore throat from strep throat. At UrgentMed Care, we offer strep testing at our Orlando and Kissimmee walk-in clinics. No appointment is needed.
What happens during a strep test?
A healthcare provider takes a swab from the back of the throat. A rapid strep test can provide an answer quickly. If the result is positive, the provider may prescribe antibiotics. If the rapid test is negative, a follow-up throat culture may be recommended for a child or teen because a rapid test can miss some infections. A follow-up culture is generally not needed for adults.
If strep is confirmed, take the prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed. Antibiotics can help shorten symptoms, reduce spread, and lower the risk of complications. If you or your child is not feeling better after 48 hours of antibiotics, contact a healthcare provider.
When can a child go back to school?
If a child has strep throat, keep them home until they no longer have a fever and they have taken antibiotics for at least 12 to 24 hours. Ask the treating provider when your child can return, and follow the school’s illness policy. Adults should use the same precautions before returning to work.
To help limit spread at home, encourage frequent handwashing, avoid sharing cups or utensils, and wash dishes used by someone who is sick.
When is a sore throat more urgent?
Seek prompt medical care for a sore throat that worsens, lasts more than a few days, or comes with a rash or signs of dehydration. Difficulty breathing, severe difficulty swallowing, or excessive drooling in a young child needs immediate medical attention. For severe symptoms, go to an emergency department or call 911.
